The past year has been a wild and bumpy one for Fox s
Last Man Standing, which brought its time-jumping ninth and and final season to a close with an episode that managed to mostly bring Kaitlyn Dever s Eve Baxter back while serving as a reflection of the season premiere. The second episode in the one-hour finale, Keep On Truckin , wasn t able to physically get Dever back into her family s arms, but showrunner Kevin Abbott & Co. did indeed keep Eve s history and relationship with Tim Allen s Mike at the forefront. Plus, as CinemaBlend learned from showrunner Kevin Abbott, there s a fairly surprising story behind how her Zoom call appearances happened.

Last Man Standing as the ever-beloved Eve Baxter, the Tim Allen sitcom was already invoking her name again for another episode partially centered on Mandy and Kyle s daughter Sarah. Similar to how Eve was previously having emotional issues getting into aunt-mode with her nieces, Molly McCook s Mandy faced some motherly hurdles with the notion that she doesn t really like her kid as a person, while Nancy Travis Vanessa continued to distinguish her matronly duties from her grand-matronly duties. And it was all bookended with a pair of scenes showcasing just how much Tim Allen s Mike adores Dever s Eve.

When
Last Man Standing was finally able to bring Kaitlyn Dever s Eve Baxter back for a full in-person guest spot in Episode 914, The Two Nieces of Eve, fans were as pumped as Tim Allen and the rest of the show s cast and crew to see her again. While Dever did pop up briefly in the season opener that followed the Super Bowl, it was only through a Zoom call with the fam, so having her back for a full Eve-centric episode was awesome. As well, her return also inspired an interesting and unexpected conversation behind the scenes.

Last Man Standing was finally able to return to Fox with its Season 9 premiere on January 3 following an afternoon full of NFL football. The downside here is that
Last Man Standing is now in its final season (barring another network stepping in to renew it), and the creative team s efforts have been slightly hindered by COVID-related safety protocols. The silver lining, though, is that this allowed for not only some interesting storytelling tactics, but also the return of former series regular Kaitlyn Dever.
