Last year marked the 60th anniversary of the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company’s Type 3, better known as the Class 33, or simply the ‘Crompton’. Mark Nicholls recounts the type’s history. In British Railways’ 1955 Modernisation Plan there was little interest for a Type 3 power category, covering locos in the 1,500-2,000hp range, but that was soon found to be a mistake. The Type 3 was actually one of the most flexible of all, able to provide a loco capable of varied mixed traffic use for light and medium freight and passenger work. It also had the ability to haul heavy loads at low to moderate speed. Furthermore, it offered the power of a Type 5 if used in multiple. ....
A Class 68 locomotive at the Vossloh factory in Spain THE first of six new diesel locomotives to power Chiltern Railways expresses between Oxfordshire, London and the West Midlands has arrived in the UK. Class 68 locomotive No 68010 was gently lifted on to tracks on a quayside at Liverpool docks on July 31 after arriving by ship from Spain, where it was built in Valencia by German company Vossloh. It was followed off the ship by No 68011. The other four locomotives will arrive later this year. Testing of the locomotives will start shortly, followed by training for Chiltern’s train drivers. The locomotives are expected to enter service between Birmingham, Banbury, Bicester and London Marylebone later this year, probably in December. ....
Debbie Francis during a round the world yacht race in 2018 A COMPANY director has described the moment she screeched with delight after learning she had been awarded an OBE. Debbie Francis, from Croft, was among the Warringtonians who were recognised in the 2021 New Year s Honours list. The 54-year-old, managing director of Direct Rail Services, received her honour for services to women in the railway industry. She told the Warrington Guardian: It s a little bit surreal to say the least and a little bit overwhelming, I m very humbled by it. I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out, it s an amazing honour. ....
David Stewart and Deborah Francis AN NHS director and a railway company boss have been recognised in the New Year honours list. Health Education England’s regional director of health libraries David Stewart, from Warrington, has been handed an MBE for services to the NHS and voluntary service to information management. Meanwhile Deborah Francis, from Croft, has been awarded an OBE for services to women in the railway industry. The manging director of Direct Rail Services, she left school at the age of 16 with virtually no qualifications but went on to graduate from Liverpool Polytechnic before gaining a masters from the Manchester Business School. ....
