Knesset panel approves Joint List's breakup after talks with Ra'am faction fail

A Knesset panel on Thursday approved the breakup of the predominantly Arab Joint List party, whose four factions are now set to run in the March elections as three separate parties, increasing the odds that at least one of them will fail to pass the electoral threshold.
The split approved by the Knesset House Committee was labeled a “technical” division. Mansour Abbas’s Ra’am had applied to split off before Wednesday night’s announcement that the Joint List was dissolving. ....

Chief rabbi condemns 'delinquent' Haredi rioters for 'desecrating God's name'

Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef condemns the ultra-Orthodox rioters who have been violently resisting police efforts to enforce lockdown restrictions, calling them “young delinquents” and “rioters” who are “desecrating God’s name” and calling on the Haredi community to renounce them.

In a First, Jewish Home Party Elects Female Leader

The Jewish Home party on Tuesday night for the first time selected a woman as its leader, choosing Yerushalayim Deputy Mayor Chagit Moshe to head the religious Zionist party.
The development seemed set to secure an alliance between Jewish Home and two other right-wing parties that would back Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in his bid to be reelected.
Moshe secured victory with 472 votes of the party’s central committee, soundly defeating her challenger Nir Orbach, who won just 369.
While Moshe is seen as aligned with Netanyahu, Orbach is a close associate of Yamina party leader Naftali Bennett, who is aiming to replace the Prime Minister. ....

Netanyahu's lawyers suggest he may once again seek immunity following amended indictment

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu s legal team asked the court on Wednesday that a hearing on the amended indictment in his corruption trial be postponed, indicating he may once more turn to lawmakers to grant him immunity from prosecution.
In November, Netanyahu’s office denied a Haaretz report that the premier planned to submit a second request for immunity from prosecution, after having had withdrawn his first request last January, to mitigate damage to Likud s election campaign, among other reasons. At the time, Netanyahu said The Publication is incorrect and baseless.

Israel’s election campaign is well underway, and Likud is already hard at work trying to disrupt the efforts of its most potent and dangerous challenger in the coming race, Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope party.
