The Nevis City Council approved Gabriel Veit as an unpaid intern on Monday, July 12.
City Administrator Dawn Veit said she met a city administrative intern from Walker at a recent training seminar, a college graduate who was earning career experience.
“I wished her well, but then I thought, ‘OK, what can I do for others?’” Dawn said.
Reluctantly calling him a guinea pig, she asked the council to offer her son, Gabriel, a similar opportunity. She said he graduated with the same major as the Walker intern, but due to COVID-19, he didn’t intern anywhere.

Spring is in the air, the rains are calling forth the new growth and the Nevis pollinator garden at the Chamber’s Visitor Center along the Heartland Trail is about to be extended into a “pollinator highway,” featuring native plants and grasses to entice the bees and butterflies to pollinate their choices, and provide valuable habitat for songbirds as well.
Pollinators are critical to our food supply, as well as to the health of our ecosystem, and are critical to our northern economy which is so dependent on the health of our natural resources.

Nevis City Council member Sue Gray said most of the area will be seeded with grasses and perennials.
“This is the first project of this type on any trail in the state,” she said. “We’re breaking ground here. But they’re going to tear it up a lot before it comes together.”

The generosity of Park Rapids has been shown by a very successful Hubbard Country Salvation Army kettle drive, recently completed (Nov. 27 through Dec. 18).
In spite of COVID-19, Hugo’s Family Marketplace, Walmart Supercenter, Coborn’s Grocery, Cwikla Ace Hardware, Walgreens Pharmacy and L&M Supply graciously allowed us to ring at their stores for four weeks of Fridays and Saturdays following safety precautions. Also the red kettle was invited to ring at the Itasca Mantrap Co-op Christmas drive-through open house.
