The full Sixth Circuit bench will hear a case concerning Tennessee’s abortion waiting-period law after the defendants in the suit filed a petition for a hearing en banc although one dissenting judge will do so begrudgingly.
The suit arose from abortion providers and other parties challenging a Tennesee law that required a 48-hour waiting period between a patient deciding to get an abortion and getting the procedure. The plaintiffs reported that the district court agreed the law is unconstitutional, prompting an appeal by state officials defending the law, which a three-judge Sixth Circuit panel denied. The request for the full circuit bench to rehear the case was granted on its merits. ....

In a divisive ruling featuring six dissents, an en banc Sixth Circuit on Tuesday reversed a district court decision that blocked enforcement of an Ohio law that criminalizes abortion procedures when the physician knows that the patient’s intent to terminate a pregnancy is because the fetus was diagnosed with Down syndrome, allowing the law to stand.
The group of medical provider plaintiffs Preterm-Cleveland, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, Women’s Med Group Professional Corporation, and Roslyn Kade, M.D. challenged the constitutionality of Ohio’s H.B. 214, “which prohibits a doctor from performing an abortion with the knowledge that the woman’s reason for aborting her pregnancy is that her fetus has Down syndrome and she does not want a child with Down syndrome,” the court explained. ....

The North Country is rich in musical talent but with venues closed and concerts virtual until the pandemic is over, it’s even harder for musicians to get their work to an audience. So last summer NCPR began featuring music by regional artists during our news programs. Ursa and the Major Key sent in some tracks that we’ve been using. NCPR’s Doyle Dean reached out to learn more about the five-piece from Plattsburgh who recently recorded their first album. Guitarist Eli Moore says the band made the most of the opportunity the pandemic presented.

ST. LOUIS Another restaurant in the St. Louis area announced it ll close its doors as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
Mangia Italiano announced it will close on Dec. 20 for good. The restaurant on S. Grand Boulevard is known for its homemade Italian cuisine.
