A childcare centre and a building on a marae have been evacuated following the discovery of explosive material in a Nelson park.
There will be a visible police presence at Founders Heritage Park for the next few hours (file picture).

Members of the public are urged to avoid Founders Heritage Park in Atawhai Drive while the Defence Force s explosive ordnance disposal unit assesses the material.
The park s carpark has also been closed as a safety precaution.
Police said there would be a visible police presence in the area for the next couple of hours while the unit disposed of the material safely.
“We’re so pleased that the new layout was so well embraced. The streets came alive with people criss-crossing the city to the various installation sites,” she said. She said the goal with widening the scope was “making the event accessible to a wider community, while still retaining the wonder and surprise” of the unique festival.

In his obituary in the Nelson Evening Mail in 1915, Cawthron was described as “the grand old man of Nelson” – and had been the most generous contributor to the city during its early years. Arrivng in Nelson as 15-year-old in 1849 after emigrating with his family from England, Cawthron amassed a fortune as a shipping agent after spending his youth working in the mines during the Australian gold rush in the 1850s.
