Problems with bin collections are due to Brexit and the lack of HGV drivers insists our letter writer
AS reported in the wider press, there is a national shortage of 60,000 HGV drivers because of Brexit.
As Christian Vassie says (Letter, July 5), it has directly affected the council’s ability to empty our bins.
May I therefore ask Messers Coverdale and Robb (Letters, July 7) exactly which parts of his letter you don’t believe?
Please face the facts. You were both taken in by a dishonest Brexit campaign. It was cynically headed by Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings who twisted the facts to suit their own interests rather than promoting what was best for Britain. ....

A NEW 15 metre-high telecoms mast is set to be built in a village near York – but parish councillors fear it will obstruct views of York Minster.
Hutchinson UK – which runs mobile network Three – has applied for permission to put the mast up in Millfield Lane in Nether Poppleton close to the entrance to Poppleton Junior Football Club.
City of York Council’s planning team recommends the plans be approved.
But Nether Poppleton Parish Council is unhappy with the mast, saying: “The parish council is aware that the open aspect of the Green Belt in this area of Poppleton affords wonderful views of the Minster and as such gives further protection to the Green Belt status of the area. ....

I agree. What exactly is the council doing about York’s environment and climate change?
When I left school in 1958 there were 318 parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Now the figure is 419.58 ppm; an increase of 31 per cent in 63 years.
Google ‘Keeling Curve’ for details. These annual increases must stop right now.
Leave the car at home and travel on electric buses.
Make them free for all York residents. We will flock to the buses in droves.
The council and First Bus will need a new income stream but better that than frying the population on a roasting planet. ....
