Those driving by Faunce Corner on Saturday may have seen a special guest at a protest against Sheriff Thomas Hodgson and Immigration and Customs Enforcement: the sheriff himself.
The protest was organized by Bristol County for Correctional Justice, a local activist group focused on upholding the rights of those inside the county’s correctional facilities.
Protester Alex Houston said that the group would like to see more transparency in the Sheriff’s Office, which she said “has a history.of just doing some things that have really hurt the people inside.” ....

He was the brilliant lawyer whose brutal 1895 cross-examination of Oscar Wilde in one of the most famous trials in British history led to the Irish dramatist’s imprisonment for homosexuality, and to his ultimate ruin. Now a previously unpublished letter reveals that Sir Edward Carson’s attack on Wilde in the Old Bailey was partly personal – a loathing that went beyond his job in defending the Marquess of Queensberry in the ill-fated libel case.

And as Carson is about to open up the arguments for the defence and a string of rent boys are about to give evidence Wilde, defeated, withdraws his case against Queensberry under advice from his lawyer, Sir Edward Clarke.
Shortly thereafter the evidence amassed by Queensberry’s team is handed to the British DPP and two criminal cases are taken against Wilde for gross indecency, the first resulting in a hung jury, the second leading to his conviction, prison, bankruptcy, exile and death in Paris in 1900. ....
