Mussels, oysters have highest levels of microplastic contamination among seafood

Environmental Health Perspectives, the study takes a look at the impact of the global microplastic pollution problem not just on the world’s oceans but also on human health.
Experts still do not fully understand the effects of microplastics on the human body. But according to Evangelos Danopoulos, the study’s lead author and a postgraduate student at Hull York Medical School, quantifying the amount of microplastics humans are ingesting is a critical step to understanding this.
Microplastic contamination highest in mollusks
For their research, Danopoulos and his colleagues studied more than 50 reports on microplastic contamination in both fish and shellfish between 2014 and 2020. Their data showed that microplastic content was zero to 10.5 microplastics per gram (MPs/g) in mollusks, 0.1–8.6 MPs/g in crustaceans and zero to 2.9 MPs/g in fish. ....

A study has revealed that a number of camels have died after foraging plastics they had mistaken for food outside Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The dromedary camels, in their large numbers, have been foraging on desert trash including plastics, on the outskirts of Dubai in the UAE. The study reveals that 1 in 100 camels die as a result of foraging on plastics. The plastic bags and trash they ingest accumulate in their stomachs and form masses known as polybexoars.

Two plastic pollution experts met in the Arabian Gulf, in the UAE. Markus Eriksen was studying plastic pollution when he met Ulrich Wernery, a camel expert. Immediately, Wernery asked Eriksen to follow him since he wanted to see the plastics. The two went on an expedition deep into the desert. Underwater seagrass in coastal areas appear to trap bits of plastic in natural bundles of fibre known as Neptune balls, researchers said Thursday.
With no help from humans, the swaying plants anchored to shallow seabeds may collect nearly 900 million plastic items in the Mediterranean alone every year, they reported in the journal Scientific Reports.
We show that plastic debris in the seafloor can be trapped in seagrass remains, eventually leaving the marine environment through beaching, lead author Anna Sanchez-Vidal, a marine biologist at the University of Barcelona, told AFP. ....
