MALAYSIA’s rehabilitation for its addiction towards cheap foreign labour is now long overdue. Covid-19 has come to disrupt the supply since last year and the withdrawal symptoms have already started to crop up. The road to addiction may have very well started in the 1980s during Malaysia’s journey of industrialisation and economic growth where the temporary solution to meet the severe labour shortage was foreign workers. The Medan Agreement was inked in 1984 for plantation and domestic workers while the later part of the 1980s would see the green light given to recruit workers from the Philippines, Thailand and Bangladesh. It was not really a problem, or at least those who tread the corridors of power did not seem to think it was, until Malaysia tried to climb the high-income ladder. ....
AirAsia Acquires Gojek Thailand For USD 50 Million The acquisition will allow AirAsia Super App to swiftly expand its operation into Thailand. Gojek’s operation in Thailand through AirAsia Digital. In exchange, the Indonesian e-hailing and fintech giant would receive USD 50 million (~RM 208 million) from the airline. This culminated after two months of talks between AirAsia and Gojek, Indonesia’s startup unicorn. The acquisition, valued at US$50mil (RM208.1mil), will be wholly satisfied by the issue of shares in the issued share capital of AirAsia Super App, which will see Gojek holding 4.76% in AirAsia Super App. This values the super app company at around US$1bil (RM4.16bil). Gojek Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes (file pic) said the announcement was the start of a “tremendous long-term strategic partnership with Gojek which is sure to rock the industry”. ....
