Northwest Alaska reports first case of COVID-19 delta variant
Northwest Alaska has seen an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases this month according to regional health care provider Maniilaq Association. Maniilaq reports that officials were notified that a lab sample collected from the service area tested positive for the new, more contagious delta variant of COVID-19.
Maniilaq officials say there may be other cases of the delta variant in the region, which includes Kotzebue, the surrounding 10 Northwest Arctic Borough villages, and the North Slope village of Point Hope. Maniilaq says the provider only sends out samples of individuals who are fully vaccinated and test positive for the virus to determine the strain.
