New Aldi store at Gateside to open by end of September

QUESTIONS have been raised regarding the future of Haddington’s current Aldi store.
The supermarket chain is due to move from Whittingehame Drive to a new store at Gateside Retail Park, on the town’s western edge, by the end of September.
Building work is under way at the new retail park, which will also have as tenants The Food Warehouse, part of the Iceland family, and Costa Coffee.
However, questions surround the future of the town centre site, where Aldi has been based for more than a decade.
The issue was raised at Haddington’s community council meeting last month by group member Jack Worden. ....

A two-week contraflow on the A90 south of Forfar is to be put in place from this weekend.
It is to allow resurfacing works on the northbound dual carriageway between the Gateside and Invereighty junctions.
Works are planned to begin on Sunday when lane closures will be put in place both northbound and southbound from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Monday to set up the contraflow. ....

The news comes just four months after we told how plans to replace the decaying Edwardian structure have been shelved until at least 2026 despite £8m being spent on a proposed site in 2011.
Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe told today of his shock at the state of the jail and demanded urgent action by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS).
Currently, 40 cells out of a total of 249 at HMP Gateside are out of commission and there is no indication from prisons chiefs as to when the jail will be fully operational again.
It means that only 188 inmates are able to be accommodated out of a normal capacity of 242 prisoners, according to information obtained from the SPS. ....

Call made for increase in number of grit bins

A COMMUNITY councillor has highlighted the need for grit bins in Haddington.
The group’s latest meeting included talks about how the community had coped during Storm Darcy earlier this year.
Graham Samuel, from Haddington and District Community Council, felt there was a lack of grit bins near where he lived in the Burnside area.
He said: “The nearest grit bin from here is a good 5-10-minute walk up towards Gateside and most of the time it is empty.”
Mr Samuel stressed that the lack of grit bins was not an issue specific to where he lived but was something needing addressed throughout the town. ....
