Addressing the launch ceremony of ‘The State of Peasants’ Rights in Sindh 2020 report, prepared by the Hari Welfare Association (HWA), at the Karachi Press Club, the speakers expressed their concerns over the plight of agriculture workers, who were facing social and economic exclusion, expulsion from the agriculture fields where they worked and the non-payment of their dues by influential landlords. ....
Speakers discuss challenges in implementation of Hindu marriage law July 1, 2021 Sindh holds the distinction of being the first and only province of Pakistan to legislate on marriage registration for the Hindus and other related issues. However, the implementation of the law has been a challenge that needs to be met. The aforesaid proposition was the main crux of a consultation on the Sindh Hindu Marriage Act 2016 organised by the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in collaboration with the Community World Service Asia. According to a statement issued, several such cases have surfaced that signal gaps in the implementation of the law due to lack of awareness among the relevant authorities as well as the public, and it was due to this that the SHRC felt the need for holding a consultation for devising a mechanism to promote awareness about the law. ....

Karachi April 11, 2021 Expressing grave concern over the recent statement by the prime minister “linking increasing sex crimes with obscenity”, the Sindh Commission on the Status of Women (SCSW) said on Saturday that such statements by the country’s highest leadership gave legitimacy to the narrative of victim-blaming and perpetuated an atmosphere of impunity for sex offenders. “Pakistan’s constitution, laws and the case law are explicit in terms of fixing the criminal responsibility of an offence solely with the offender and not with the victim,” said SCSW chairperson Nuzhat Shirin in a statement. “The unfortunate statement by the prime minister inadvertently implies that the rape is the punishment of obscenity, the definition of which has been left to the general public.” ....
