The Slater Memorial Museum on the campus of Norwich Free Academy recently created an exhibition within an exhibition. Having grown its collection of works by Ellis Walter Ruley fourfold over the past few years, the museum has installed a new wall in the Connecticut Artists of the Twentieth Century gallery, featuring the paintings of Ellis Walter Ruley (1888-1959). ....

As Black History Month draws to a close, I am reminded that my former hometown has been blessed with many, many prominent and accomplished Black citizens who have had such a positive impact on our lives in Norwich.
It is fair to say that members of Norwich’s Black population have made significant impacts locally, statewide and even nationally in various fields, ranging from education and social services to politics and and the arts, to social services and civil rights.
Some, like Virginia Christian, the first elected Black City Councilor in eastern Connecticut, made their marks more than a half-century ago and paved the way for the likes of Jacqueline Caron, who would serve multiple Council terms years later. ....

Historically Speaking: Ellis Ruley of Norwich 'an artist at heart'

As we celebrate Black History Month and the great contributions of African Americans to the fabric of this great society, let us not forget it happened underneath the weight of racism that has existed throughout our history and continues today. 
The Ellis Walter Ruley story, African American artist, is one of strength, endurance and tragedy. During his lifetime, he faced extreme adversity and racism as a result of his interracial marriage and his ability to achieve the “American dream” with the purchase of a new car and home. 
In his early life, Ruley worked as a rock mason until an auto accident occurred and the settlement award of $25,000 was to be split between Ruley and the other passenger.  The initial award of $12,000 to Ruley was reduced to $8,000 after the judge declared the initial amount excessive. Ruley then purchased a 1932 green Chevrolet convertible coupe called the “Green Hornet.” He married a white woman name ....
