While South Africa may have been lucky to get access to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine quickly, some issues remain, writes
Neil Stacey.
South Africa’s vaccine rollout got underway last week, using the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, just three weeks after the release of Phase 3 efficacy trial results for that vaccine, a truly remarkable turnaround time.
South Africa had previously ordered nine million doses of the J&J vaccine to be delivered later in the year, but after the AstraZeneca vaccine’s apparent failure against the 501Y.V2 variant, Johnson & Johnson agreed to supply 500 000 doses out of their research stock, free of charge and delivered right away. ....

ANALYSIS | AstraZeneca in South Africa - to rollout or not to rollout

Justin Tallis/AFP
against the new variant, 501Y.V2,
with a third wave around the corner, is not that devastating for two reasons.
Alarming announcements made on Sunday night have cast a dark shadow over South Africa’s vaccine rollout plan.
The results of a trial of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, conducted in South Africa, appear to indicate the vaccine’s efficacy may be as low as 10% against the new variant, 501Y.V2, that is prevalent throughout the country.
In response, the government has postponed the planned rollout of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, marking the first time any country’s vaccination programme has been halted over doubts about effectiveness, and dealing a severe blow to South Africa’s already flimsy vaccine rollout plan. ....

It appears that the vaccine rollout will not significantly shield us from a winter wave, writes
Neil Stacey.
South Africa’s second wave of Covid-19 infections is rapidly abating, with daily infections in apparent freefall.
The 7-day rolling average of daily infections peaked at 19 042 on the 11 January, and has dropped sharply to 8141 as of the 28 January. It will continue to drop, though it is unclear exactly how far.
After our first wave of infections, the daily rate of infections settled at a steady rate of around 1500 cases per day, and we may see something similar occur over the next few months, though the only method available for estimating the exact level is guesswork. ....
