Source rams with the right EBVs to deliver benefits on your farm

Texels demonstrated their ability to add value to their progeny across a range of farms and systems in the RamCompare project
Texel sires have demonstrated the breed’s ability to add value to flocks across the UK in the latest results from AHDB’s RamCompare project, with the breed providing 11 of the top 15 rams for carcase merit over the project’s duration from 2016-2020.
Seven of the top 10 rams for carcase merit across the project’s timespan were Texels as were seven of the top 10 of the rams used in the project’s latest research season, 2020.
Designed to provide an overarching index showing the genetic merit of sires used in commercial flocks, the carcase merit index combines EBVs for carcase weight, carcase conformation and carcase fat class, explains Texel Sheep Society chief executive John Yates. ....

The Royal Highland Showcase has revealed excellent livestock entry figures for its sheep, cattle and goat classes.
More than 1100 entries have been confirmed for the innovative hybrid event, which is being held in partnership with Royal Bank of Scotland, when it takes place at Ingliston from the June 14 to 20.
The showing and judging of the livestock will be livestreamed during The Showcase to the usual home-based audience, but also accessible globally in a free hook up to the internet, shining a spotlight on some of the best of the country’s livestock. ....

Organisers of the virtual Royal Highland Show say they have been “spurred on” after receiving more than 1,100 entries.
After the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s show, the event will take place at the Ingliston showground, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, from 14 to 20 June.
The showing and judging of the livestock will be livestreamed during the behind-closed-doors showcase, which will welcome exhibitors from across the UK to shine a spotlight on the best of the country’s livestock.
So far, 241 beef cattle entries have been received, with the largest class being British Limousin (37), with Highland cattle close behind (33). The dairy section has seen 78 entries, with classes in dairy showmanship (28), Holstein dairy calves (32) and coloured dairy calves (18) taking place this year ....

While there is no doubt this year s Royal Highland Showcase cannot be a patch on the previous world-class livestock events we have all come to love and live for at Ingliston – due to the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions – it is however, one that has to be hugely admired and relished when the vast majority of such events have either been cancelled or postponed.
Having the inspiration and enthusiasm to keep this year s show alive from the onset, when many were dropping off like flies, has not only been a massive undertaking by all the organisers and those behind the scenes, but also the breeders and exhibitors who have enabled The Royal Highland Showcase to finally come to fruition. ....

An impressive 1,100 livestock entries have been confirmed for the upcoming Royal Highland Showcase, despite the event going ahead without a live audience.
The showing and judging of the livestock will be livestreamed during the behind closed doors showcase, which takes place from 14 to 20 June.
Earlier this year, Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) directors confirmed they had shelved plans for a physical Royal Highland Show, instead opting to stream the event online.
The planning team scoped out an outline concept - a hybrid show with judging, show jumping and competitions taking place at the showground behind closed doors. ....
