A handful of U.S. museums sent collection artworks to the auction block at a Sotheby's American art sale that totalled $15 million on Wednesday. Women artists in the sale including Mary Cassatt, Georgia O'Keeffe, Grandma Moses and Gertude Abercrombie brought big prices for some small-sized works overall. Although some of the sales could be earmarked to fund new acquisitions, the sell-off from public institutions falls within a two-year period in which museum association guidelines . ....
Palm Springs Art Museum has a new installation in the lot across from its main campus. Artist Gonzalo Lebrija s History of Suspended Time (A monument for the impossible) features a car suspended over a pool of liquid, seeming as if it is frozen in time, according to the museum. The installation is meant to encourage thought about “suspension and the passage of time focusing on precise moments of stillness and impact. said Rochelle Steiner, the museum s chief curator and director of public programs and education. The museum will present an exhibition titled American Roads in tandem with the installation, according to Steiner. It is a portfolio of photographs that capture our love of and dependence upon cars, while also contemplating the complexity of this country’s major highways and local roads,” Steiner said in a prepared statement. ....
When the Marilyn Monroe statue with her billowing white dress appeared in downtown Palm Springs a decade ago, she drew lots of attention. From 2012 to 2014, people came to snap a photo of her 26-foot likeness inspired by a scene from her 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch.” The city even showed free outdoor movies featuring the “blond bombshell” during the sculpture’s stint at Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way. Then the sculpture was removed. Now “Forever Marilyn” by J. Seward Johnson is set to return to a prominent spot in the resort town and not everyone is happy about it. ....
Palm Springs Art Museum Board of Trustees Executive Chair Steve Maloney passed away Tuesday night, museum spokesperson Scott Slaven said Thursday. Maloney, a contemporary artist with exhibitions throughout the United States and Switzerland, was 78. He was a member of the museum s board since 2007 and elected as chair in February 2018. Palm Springs Art Museum officials described Maloney as a visionary leader, devoted husband and father, and a good friend to so many, in a prepared statement. He was extraordinarily passionate about Palm Springs Art Museum, museum officials said. At the core of his efforts was a determination to serve as a guiding force in maximizing the benefits the museum could bring to the community and to its visitors. ....
