This chromolithograph map captures a critical moment in Malay history where Britain was beginning to consolidate its suzerainty over the resource-rich peninsula. The enormous map (more than 60 inches high!) was drawn and compiled by the premier Royal Asiatic Society surveyor, John van Cuylenburg, and published in large-scale format in London by Edward Stanford s Geographical Establishment. Coverage extends roughly from Phatthalung and Trang, Siam/Thailand south to include Singapore and the adjacent straits. ....

THE headlines of The Canberra Times of 6th July, 1948, reads, “Sir Edward Gent Killed in a Plane Collision”. Sir Edward was flying in an RAF transport plane, an Avro York, when it collided with a Scandinavian Airlines’ passenger plane while in holding pattern over Northolt airport, London, under adverse weather conditions.

The news shocked the people of Malaya as Sir Edward was the first High Commissioner to the Malayan Federation and had also been the Governor of the short-lived Malayan Union. It should also have invoked an emotional response from some of the former officers in the service of the Rajah of Sarawak as Gent had also played a part in hasteni ....

Christmas Island | Geography & History

First sighted in 1615 by Richard Rowe, master of the
Thomas, the island was named on Christmas Day 1643 by Captain William Mynors of the British East India Company. In 1887 specimens of soil and rock were collected by the men of HMS
Egeria; the British naturalist John Murray analyzed the specimens and found that they were nearly pure phosphate of lime. In 1888 the island was annexed by Great Britain, and the first settlement was established at Flying Fish Cove by George Clunies-Ross of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. A 99-year lease, granted in 1891 to Clunies-Ross and Murray, to mine phosphate and cut timber was transferred six years later to the Christmas Island Phosphate Company, Ltd., which was largely owned by the former lessees. In 1900 Christmas Island was incorporated in the British crown colony of the Straits Settlements with its capital at Singapore. During World War II the island was occupied by the Japanese. In 1948 the governments of New Zealand and Australia acqui ....
