Legal Aid, Vermont give 14 days to those facing hotel loss

Legal Aid, Vermont give 14 days to those facing hotel loss
June 30, 2021 GMT
MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) The state and Vermont Legal Aid are giving people who are facing a loss of emergency hotel rooms 14 days to show they can remain eligible for emergency housing, officials said Wednesday.
The agreement, signed Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Christina Reiss, came a day after Legal Aid sued the state over the end of the emergency program set up to help the homeless during the pandemic.
The program was to have stricter eligibility requirements starting Thursday about who will be able to stay in state-supplied hotel rooms. ....

BRATTLEBORO — A lawsuit filed against the Brattleboro Retreat by a former nurse is going to trial in federal court.
During a virtual, pre-trial conference on Wednesday, attorneys for Elizabeth Dignitti, who worked at the Retreat for 10 years before being terminated, said all the required mediation had been conducted and no resolution was reached.
There has been some follow-up and I m sure we will continue to be in touch if there is any movement in that area, said Aimee Goddard of Windham Law in Brattleboro.
In court documents filed in May 2020, attorneys for Dignitti claimed she was fired after filing a complaint about jokes of a sexual nature made about a male nurse, Edward Dowd, who was also a union representative. The jokes were made during a meeting with Chief Nursing Officer Meghan Baston and a number of other managers and directors at the Retreat, states the suit. ....

Anderson: Nolan, a U.S. Attorney Vermont can be proud of

I served as U.S. attorney for Vermont and as State of Vermont commissioner of Public Safety. I was appointed to these positions with bipartisan support by honorable Republicans: President George Bush and Gov. Phil Scott. While I have always considered myself a Republican, I am no fan of Donald Trump and very much look forward to his departure from the White House on Jan. 20. Trump, however, did one good thing for Vermont: with the bipartisan support of Sen. Leahy and Gov. Scott, he appointed Christina Nolan as the U.S. attorney for Vermont. Vermonters would be well-served if Senators Leahy and Sanders worked with the Biden administration to reappoint U.S. Attorney Nolan, a native Vermonter with deep ties to and love for Vermont. ....
