Newark, NJ   A Newark man was sentenced today to 96 months in prison for his role in a large international money laundering conspiracy and using a stolen identity in furtherance of the scheme, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced. Edwin Deleon-Batista previously pleaded guilty by videoconference before U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden to an information charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and one count of identity fraud. Judge Hayden imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court: From March 2018 through October 2019, Deleon-Batista laundered over $23 million in cash drug proceeds on behalf of a money laundering organization with close ties to drug trafficking organizations in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office,  the judge sentenced Jersey City resident Ramon Herrera, 37, on May 13 in Newark federal court following his previous guilty plea to an information charging him with one count of wire fraud. According to the USAO, between May 2015 and January 2018, Herrera used his position as a registered broker and financial advisor at a clearing services company associated with unnamed “Financial Institution-1” to meet and learn confidential information about the institution’s customers in the Hudson County area, for whom he was ostensibly providing advice and brokerage services.

Hayden handed down the sentence to Ahmed A-Hady, of Keyport, after he pleaded guilty in October to one count of being in possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. While executing a search warrant at the pawn shop, which his father owned, authorities recovered a dozen firearms, including three AR-15 style firearms from the pawn shop and the apartment above the store where A-Hady lived. Three of the weapons were registered to A-Hady, who cannot possess them as a convicted felon.
