Scientists: Grizzlies expand turf but still need protection BILLINGS, Mont. â Grizzly bears are slowly expanding the turf where they roam in parts of the northern Rocky Mountains but need continued protections, according to government scientists who concluded that no other areas of the country would be suitable for reintroducing the fearsome predators. The Fish and Wildlife Service on March 31 released its first assessment in almost a decade about the status of grizzly bears in the contiguous U.S. The bruins are shielded from hunting as a threatened species except in Alaska. Grizzly populations grew over the past 10 years in two areas â the Yellowstone region of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, with more than 700 bears; and around Glacier National Park in Montana, which is home to more than 1,000 of the animals. ....

Infectious disease expert Dr. Andrew Pavia said new variants of the virus are circulating in the state, and those appear to be more transmissible. To avoid another surge, Pavia said Utahns should keep wearing masks and social distancing. The state department of health reported 514 new cases of the disease Wednesday. Rodrick Dow Craythorn, 52, of Syracuse, Utah, was also sentenced to six months of home detention and two years of probation, for excavating and damaging archeological resources, a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Wyoming, said. Craythorn will also have to pay $31,566 in restitution. Wyoming U.S. District Judge Scott Skavdahl sentenced Craythorn on Wednesday. In a statement, Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly called the case the most significant investigation of damage to archaeological resources in Yellowstone National Park’s recent history. In late 2019 and early 2020, Craythorn dug 17 holes and damaged a grave in the Fort Yellowstone cemetery, according to the press release. ....
