Kirill Victorovich Firsov, Russian cybercriminal gets 30 months, for selling stolen U.S. data


“This platform provided cybercriminals with easy access to the personal accounts and information of people around the world, including Americans,” Acting U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman said of the site.
“Stopping that flow of stolen information to criminals is critical to addressing the cybercrime threats facing our country, and we will prosecute those who are responsible,” he said in a statement.
Launched in late 2013, DEER.IO leased space on its site for cybercriminals to sell illegal products and services. Firsov admitted in the plea agreement that he was its administrator until his arrest.
DEER.IO went offline a couple of weeks after Firsov was arrested. At the time, the site boasted approximately 3,000 active shops with sales exceeding $17 million, he acknowledged in the plea agreement. ....

Law360 (April 20, 2021, 5:56 PM EDT) A California federal judge Tuesday rejected Bank of America s bid to dismiss claims it violated state law when it incorrectly reported that a customer had declared bankruptcy, saying a failure to do a reasonable cross-check of his information would have violated California law.
In her ruling, U.S. District Judge Cynthia Bashant said that while it is too early to say if Bank of America s failure to double-check if William Norman Brooks III had indeed filed for bankruptcy was reasonable or not, the fact there was publicly available information the bank could have looked at to avoid the error means Brooks has. ....

California Lifts COVID Capacity Limits on Places of Worship

California public health officials this week lifted capacity limits on in-person services at places of worship from the state’s reopening scheme, following a handful of Supreme Court decisions in favor of congregants challenging the state’s COVID-19 capacity limits.
“In response to recent judicial rulings, effective immediately, location and capacity limits on places of worship are not mandatory but are strongly recommended,” the California Department of Public Health wrote on the state’s industry guidelines website Monday night.
But one attorney told Courthouse News the capacity restrictions lifted Monday don’t moot the lawsuits challenging California’s COVID-19 restrictions, since the state has vowed to implement restrictions again should a COVID-19 variant create another public health emergency. ....
