Harvey Tyrrell death: Electrician loses appeal to reduce sentence

Trial judge Martyn Zeidman QC described the pub as a disgrace and a “timebomb waiting to go off”, sentencing Naylor to a year of immediate custody and handing Bearman a nine-year term.
At the Court of Appeal, Graham Trembath QC argued Naylor’s sentence was manifestly excessive for a 74-year-old with no previous convictions.
He also argued that some of the expert evidence in the trial introduced new details to the case, and other work was carried out on the lights.
He said: “This is a tragic fatality that occurred many weeks, on the unchallenged evidence, after he left that public house and – of significance, we submit – before the garden circuit was attached.” ....

Gallery: Walking the Thames for legal support

The weather smiled - at least by the standards of the past month - on the 120 intrepid lawyers and other colleagues concerned about access to justice who inaugurated the new legal walking season on Saturday. Lead walker Lord Justice Haddon-Cave set the pace by running a full marathon between Tower Bridge and Hampton Court. Less spritely types made do with a half marathon to Putney. It is rumoured that one or two teams found a pub along the way.
The event has so far raised £13,000 for the ....

It’s been a long, long wait, but the legal walking season is back. This Saturday (22 May) at least 25 teams from across the profession will take a scenic walk along the River Thames, raising money for legal advice charities.
Walk the Thames, organised by the London Legal Support Trust, begins at City Hall. Walkers have a choice of routes - a half and full marathon, finishing at Putney or Hampton Court respectively. Lead participants Lord Justice Haddon-Cave (running the full marathon) will start the event from Tower Bridge and Sir Peter Gross will lead from Putney.
’We have taken every possible step to ensure the event will be safe and enjoyable for all,’ says London Legal Support Trust chief executive Nezahat Cihan. Fundraising efforts have never been more needed, she says. ’However large or small a team, every contribution is valuable as LLST continues to fight for access to justice and the availability of legal advice for a ....
