English schools in Quebec do not have to conform with Quebec’s law on secularism banning teachers from wearing religious signs, such as the Islamic hijab or the Jewish kippah, the Quebec Superior Court ruled on Tuesday.
In a 240-page decision, Justice Marc-André Blanchard ruled that Article 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, guaranteeing minority language rights, also guarantees the cultural rights of Quebec’s English community.
That means English schools can hire teachers who wear religious signs to reflect the diversity of students in Quebec’s English schools.
Blanchard based his ruling on a 1988 Supreme Court of Canada decision overruling a French-only requirement on business signs in Quebec and Article 23, which cannot be overridden by the notwithstanding clause. ....

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
Good evening to you.
We begin with COVID-19 vaccines. And while a maximum of 3.1 million of them could be administered in Canada every week, the country’s vaccine rollout is only operating at about half capacity, with 1.8 million people (58 per cent of 3.1 million) getting a shot in the last seven days.
The maximum number is based on a survey of provinces’ and territories’ individual capabilities, which was compiled by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The agency recently reported the figure to the House of Commons Health committee, following up on a request from NDP health critic Don Davies. Charlie Pinkerton and Iain Sherriff-Scott have the details. ....

People take part in a demonstration following a Superior Court ruling on Bill 21, Quebec s secularism law, in Montreal on Tuesday. The ruling upheld most of law, though said it can t apply to English schools.
In the mythology of Quebec nationalists, the night of the long knives refers to an all-night bargaining session at Ottawa s Château Laurier hotel during the constitutional talks in the fall of 1981.
That night, provincial representatives reached an agreement among themselves to support Pierre Trudeau s wide-ranging reforms. ....

The province’s contentious secularism law, Bill 21, which forbids public sector workers like teachers, police officers and judges, from wearing religious symbols was partly struck down Tuesday by the Quebec Superior Court.
Justice Marc-André Blanchard ruled that the law is mostly constitutional. However, under section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the law cannot be enforced in English school boards because it violates minority language education rights.
Blanchard also concluded that the law infringes on section 3 of the Charter, which “guarantees Canadian citizens the democratic right to vote in a general federal or provincial election and the right to be eligible for membership in the House of Commons or of a provincial legislative assembly.” ....
