Financial autonomy will aid judicial independence For the past two weeks, judicial workers across the country have been on strike to protest the lack of financial autonomy for the critical arm of government. At a period when anarchy is almost set upon the land by the activities of criminal gangs, it bodes ill that the court system is also out of reach for the common man. The issues in this controversy are clear. The 1999 constitution (as amended) grants financial autonomy to the federal and state judiciaries. To compel compliance by governors, a former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) filed separate actions in courts. Removal: Nobody told me my offence, says ex-CJN Onnoghen Ade Adesomoju, Abuja The immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has expressed surprise about how he was suddenly told that he had been removed from office without doing any wrong. He did not name the personalities involved in the drama. Onnoghen said nobody told him anything about his offence when he was told that he had been removed.
