Virtual, In-person Events to Mark 4th Annual Juneteenth Event

Housing and Development Newsletter
Community members Simone Ruskamp, Chiany Dri and Jordan Killebrew brought a reiteration of Juneteenth back to Santa Barbara as several Black/African American Elders have celebrated in the region in the past.
In 2018, Ruskamp, Dri and Killebrew gathered to celebrate Junteenth at El Centro on Santa Barbara s lower Westside. This first event featured home-cooked soul food, Black-centered programming; and a safe space for the community to come together to celebrate Black culture.
The following year, Juneteenth SB partnered with the Santa Barbara Public Library, where the event grew to 400 people.
In 2020, due to COVID-19, the celebration was a virtual event that had some 13,000 viewers and featured an array of videos of Black community members sharing their stories, showcasing their work, and their collective histories. ....

Santa Barbara's Library Plaza to Be Named in Honor of Late Philanthropist Michael Towbes | Local News

The mood struck him again on Tuesday.
The only thing you absolutely need to know is the location of the library, Friedman said, quoting Albert Einstein. When this project is done, everyone will know and love the location of our library. It s just going to be phenomenal and part of the cultural hub when it is completed.
The City Council on Tuesday voted 7-0 to approve a naming opportunity system for the Library Plaza, which has been closed for several years. Most recently it was used as a staging area for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art renovation.
Eventually, the plaza will become a hub for events and activities. It is near museums, theaters and concert venues, and officials envision the 10,000-square-foot space becoming the center of the cultural arts district.  ....
