N.W.T. judge overturns rental office decision on YWCA housing

The N.W.T. YWCA convinced the N.W.T. Supreme Court to overturn a decision a rental officer had made concluding that the Residential Tenancies Act applies to the YWCA s transitional housing program. The judge concluded the program falls squarely within the exemptions provided for in the Act.(Richard Gleeson/CBC)
Transitional housing programs run by the Northwest Territories YWCA are not subject to the law that sets out the rules for all landlords and tenants.
In coming to that conclusion, a Northwest Territories Supreme Court justice overturned a decision by a rental officer who came to the opposite conclusion. ....

Judge denies publication ban in Yellowknife murder case

The N.W.T. Supreme Court has turned down the Crown prosecutor s request for a publication ban on details of the death of a 22-year-old woman in Yellowknife last spring.

CBC is challenging a publication ban the prosecutor wants on information about the death of a 22-year-old woman in Yellowknife last May. The information came out in court during the sentencing of two people who plead guilty to helping cover up the death.(Walter Strong/CBC)
Arguing for a ban on details of an alleged murder in Yellowknife, a Crown prosecutor said that publication bans are sometimes more necessary in smaller populations such as the North than they are in large southern centres.
Blair MacPherson said in Northwest Territories Supreme Court on Wednesday that the CBC had made powerful and persuasive arguments, against the ban, but added they were arguments for a southern jurisdiction . we re asking for a decision that takes into account the context here. ....

Two accused of being accessories after the fact to murder each sentenced to 10 months

Two people who helped cover up a killing in Yellowknife last spring have been sentenced to 10 months in jail and two years probation.
Jordan Nande and Lisa Brulé admitted they helped cover up the killing of 22-year-old Breanna Menacho. Her body was found in a Yellowknife apartment on May 6, according to the RCMP.
Devon Larabie is charged with murder in connection with Menacho s death. His preliminary inquiry is scheduled to take place in June. ....
