Lawyers for businesswoman Asha “Mrs Ram” Mirchandani and the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) have come to an amicable agreement in their long-running dispute surrounding the provision of water to the Casa Grande Hotel in St Philip.
“The behaviour of counsel has been exemplary and the court commends them for the way they have approached the matter, and the efficient way which the order was brought before the court, crafted and agreed,” Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham said yesterday.
The Knitwear Ltd/BWA matter was back before Sir Patterson and Justices of Appeal Francis Belle and Margaret Reifer in the Court of Appeal. ....

Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes “got it wrong” when he sentenced Jamaican Dean George Scott to six months in jail for breaking quarantine to get a sweet drink.
This was the submission of Queen’s Counsel Andrew Pilgrim, who was arguing in the Court of Appeal yesterday.
However, Senior Crown Counsel Oliver Thomas argued the Chief Magistrate has always been consistent in his approach to sentencing quarantine breakers and it just happened that all the others were in positions to pay fines.
Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham and Justices of Appeal Rajendra Narine and Margaret Reifer will give their decision today. ....
