Why the Poudre flooded: Colorado meteorologist explains

Tuesday s Black Hollow Flood that spilled into the Cache la Poudre River, destroying five homes and killing one person  three others are missing  likely won t be the last flood to rock the river this summer.
National Weather Service Boulder meteorologist Paul Schlatter surveyed the flood zone and said what happened from a weather standpoint wasn t an anomaly but quite typical of July afternoon thunderstorms in Colorado s mountains.
That s why he said residents and recreationists in the Poudre Canyon should pay attention to weather forecasts this summer and fall. Even more so the next two weeks because he said the forecast calls for a continual weather pattern of afternoon thunderstorm chances with monsoon moisture available for Northern Colorado. ....

Brown warns of more evacuations as Oregon's 'monster' fire tests forest practices

(The Center Square) – Oregon Gov. Kate Brown offered a warning to Oregonians on Tuesday about the threat of the Bootleg Fire: start thinking about evacuations now.
In the two weeks since it was first reported in Klamath County on July 6, the fire has swelled to 388,359 acres according to INCIWEB. It s added an average of 27,714 acres a day and overwhelmed fire crews that have spent the past 10 days retreating from it for their own safety.
The Bootleg Fire has destroyed at least 70 homes and 100 buildings, according to local authorities. It s 30% contained, but Brown offered little hope the inferno will ease soon. At least 2,000 households have been evacuated with 5,000 more in danger. ....

Having already devoured a span of acres that could swallow Los Angeles, the Bootleg Fire is now generating its own weather.
Since the flames took hold on July 6 in southern Oregon, the blaze has scorched over 388,000 acres and is only 30% contained, according to InciWeb. It s currently unknown how the flames started, and after two weeks of feeding off of the parched landscape wrought by an intense heat wave and months of drought, it has become the largest wildfire to burn in the West this year.
The Bootleg Fire has driven thousands of residents from their homes and threatens many more. At least 2,000 homes have been evacuated thus far, and another 5,000 are currently threatened by the blaze, according to The Associated Press. In addition, the fire has destroyed at least 70 homes and more than 100 outbuildings. On Monday, July 19, the blaze merged with ....

Smoky skies have made for some amazing sunsets (and sunrises) across the state of Iowa. Air quality hasn’t been an issue locally, but to the east it’s been a problem for people suffering chronic respiratory illnesses. Smoke will begin to thin in the coming days. This smoke is coming from wildland fires burning in parts of the west and in Canada. The Bootleg fire is the third largest in Oregon history. Rounding out the top four: 2012 the Long Draw fire consuming 558,198 acres; the second largest was in 2002 and that was the Biscuit fire which charred 500,000 acres and before the B ....
