The Human Rights Council this morning adopted the Universal Periodic Review outcomes of Bulgaria, Marshall Islands, United States and Croatia.
Speaking on the Universal Periodic Review outcome of Bulgaria were China, Cuba, Ethiopia, India, Libya, Morocco, Nepal, Russian Federation, Sudan, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Nations Children s Fund, and Venezuela.
The following civil society organizations took the floor on the Universal Periodic Review outcome of Bulgaria: World Jewish Congress, International Lesbian and Gay Association, Advocates for Human Rights, and International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Peace groups warn of 'widespread resistance' following Johnson's decision to build more nukes


DIRECT action could be launched over the government’s “dangerous” decision to increase its cap on nuclear warheads by almost half, campaigners warned today.
The integrated review raises the limit on the number of Trident missiles that can be stored from 180 to 260. It signals an end to 30 years of gradual nuclear disarmament in Britain.
The 44 per cent increase is also the biggest by any nation since the cold war, according to Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
Pacifist group Peace Pledge Union warned that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cap increase will be met by “widespread resistance, including non-violent direct action.” ....

Uncertainty surrounds UN nuclear-ban treaty | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

For anti-nuclear activists, the past few years have been a time of hope. In September 2017, 122 members of the United Nations adopted the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which bans the development, possession, testing, and use of the arms. Three years later, Honduras became the 50th member to ratify the treaty, which ensured that it would go into effect. That much-anticipated event happened on January 22.
However, enthusiasm is dampened by the fact that not a single nuclear power has signed on to the treaty. Even NATO members and Japan have withheld their support, saying that TPNW doesn’t do enough to address global security concerns. Without the participation of so many countries, the prospect of meaningful nuclear arms reduction not to mention elimination remains a pipe dream. ....
