news Daily coronavirus infections hit record highs in 14 Japan prefectures over past month The Mainichi © The Mainichi (Mainichi) TOKYO Coronavirus infections hit single-day highs in 14 of Japan s 47 prefectures over the past month, though many of the prefectures are not subject to quasi-emergency measures that have been implemented to curb the spread of the virus. As of April 19, quasi-emergency virus measures had not been implemented in 10 of the 14 prefectures where daily infection numbers hit record highs. These prefectures lie mainly in the Tohoku region in northeast Japan and the Shikoku region in west Japan, and although infection numbers in those areas are not as high as in Osaka Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area, where coronavirus variants have spread, experts fear the increase could cause local medical systems to collapse.

It enables people to make emergency reports via the internet using smartphones or other devices and their location information is instantly sent to fire stations, leading to quick dispatches. The system replaces conventional reporting methods for people with disabilities, such as email and facsimile, and has spread in various regions as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Fire and Disaster Management Agency is promoting it to fire departments nationwide. According to the Niigata Prefectural Government, the system has been introduced in four municipalities in the prefecture Niigata, Uonuma, Tsubame and Yahiko.

There has been a spate of accidents while clearing snow four people died between the evenings of Jan. 10 to 11, and at least 33 people were injured on Jan. 11. All four died while removing snow on their own.
