These prefectures lie mainly in the Tohoku region in northeast Japan and the Shikoku region in west Japan, and although infection numbers in those areas are not as high as in Osaka Prefecture and the Tokyo metropolitan area, where coronavirus variants have spread, experts fear the increase could cause local medical systems to collapse.
