What to do with end-of-semester wasted furniture

COLUMBIA - As the spring semester ends, streets overflow with discarded furniture; too often still useable. The problem is, people don t care or don t bother to take it anywhere.Â
In Columbia, there are limited resources to pick up the used goods, but one example is The Love SeatÂ at 2600 Rangeline Street. The company works as a thrift store that also works with the community to pick up used household items around the area.Â
Tully Douce, the furniture bank coordinator at The Love Seat, drives around town picking up and delivering used furniture to those who need it. He says this time of year, he sees a lot of good furniture going to waste. According to Douce, college students are a demographic that could really increase their donations.Â ....

Sustain Mizzou to become full campus program with funding, paid staff

Sustain Mizzou was established in 2003, operating on a shoestring budget ever since. But in the upcoming fall semester, it will become a campus program with paid staff and $90,000 in University of Missouri funding.
The biggest thing is we ll have funding, said University of Missouri senior Zoe Westhoff, president of Sustain Mizzou. Generally, we don t have any funding.
It will allow the organization to accomplish more, Westhoff said.
We re just expanding and the funding will give us a lot more resources, said Westhoff, of Lancaster, Calif. It takes us to a new level.
Sustain Mizzou will replace the MU Sustainability Office in the fall semester, she said. ....

Battle High School senior with autism will always remember prom

Blake, his date and his mom say it was memorable and fun.
Blake is a senior at Battle, and he has autism. His mom, Lora Hinkel, said he enjoys dances anyway and going to prom is a milestone.
Anytime he can do something inclusive with the rest of his peers, it s important, his mom said.
April was Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. Hinkel, a speech-language pathologist and learning specialist at Russell Boulevard Elementary School, posted about the prom on Facebook. Blake wore a tuxedo.
It may not have been a traditional prom experience, but when he looked at me sideways and smiled when I told him how handsome he looked in his tuxedo, my heart melted, his mom wrote in the post. ....
