New varieties of performance arts arise from the pandemic

By John Busbee Photo by TheatreMidwest One truth always seems to emerge from cultural chaos: creativity will find a way to adapt, overcome and continue to engage the public. Central Iowa is showing its mettle during these challenging times, and some wonderful offerings are arising, phoenix-like, from the pandemic fires. The end of COVID-19 is not known, but the promise of vaccines helps. The economy is fighting back, including the creative economy. Many theatre companies remain publicly dormant, yet behind the scenes, each continues to pencil in plans for their future. When the time is right, they will emerge to again share their special brands of performances. Until then, each encourages their patrons and the public to stay in touch to be updated about progress toward that day when the curtains rise again.

From the very first scene of the very first act of “King Headly II,” I was hooked: I wanted to immerse myself in the work of August Wilson. The language was powerful. The expressive monologues were lyrical. The depth of characterization was mesmerizing. Depicting everyday people in everyday situations, Wilson found poetry in the struggle for survival. American Stage Theatre Company is responsible for introducing me and many others in the Tampa Bay area to Wilson’s Century Cycle. The cycle includes 10 plays, nine of which take place in Pittsburgh’s Hill district, each set in a different decade of the 20th century. In January 2009, I saw American Stage’s production of “King Headly II.” It was the second in the series to be produced by American Stage Theatre. The theater made a commitment to producing all the plays in the cycle a pledge that was fulfilled during the 2016-17 season with the final chapter, “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” American Stage Theat

| Cinema | December 17th, 2020 gregcarlson1@gmail.com The Safari, known more recently as the Marcus Safari 7 Discount and the Marcus Safari Value Cinema, has been sold to Ignite Church. The unsurprising news heralds the transition of Moorhead, Minnesota’s surviving public movie exhibitor from one kind of sanctuary to another. Like any cinema, the Safari brought people together to dream in the dark. This week, friends have shared many stories of memorable movie going experiences, birthday parties, tearful break-ups, first dates, and thrilling kisses my own happened in the back row of auditorium one during a 1984 screening of “2010: The Year We Make Contact.”
