Budget: Co-operators hail Administrative Structure; disapprove SFB move

The Cooperative sector has offered mixed reactions to the budgetary announcements made by the Union Finance Minister on Monday. While some cooperators have lauded the idea of setting up a separate Administrative Structure for multi-state co-ops, others would like to get included into the discussions before it takes shape.
While a few have welcomed the govt move on giving sops for converting into small finance banks, majority have not liked the budgetary announcement on the issue and alleged that it is an attempt to destroy a 100 years old co-op movement in the country.
Most of the co-operators have, however, welcomed the FM announcement of strengthening multi-state co-ops but have asked in the same breath about its actual shape. ....

Cong trounces BJP in Kanker Dist Co-op Union elections

Congress leaders won the recently concluded elections of Chhattisgarh based Kanker District Cooperative Union. In this election State Vice-President of Mahila Congress and Former District Panchayat Member Sio Potai was elected as President of the Union.
She got 8 votes while her rival BJP leader Hemlata Parate received five votes. Narad Puram was elected as Vice President. Nitin Potai became the delegate of the State Cooperative Union.
The 13 governing members exercised their votes. It is to be noted that after the establishment of Kanker District Cooperative Union in 2017, it is the first time that the congress party has won a one-sided victory. ....

Nafscob elects new Board; Telangana cooperator Rao replaces Sanghani

Telangana State Cooperative Apex Bank Chairman Konduru Ravinder Rao was unanimously elected as the new President of the apex body of state cooperative banks-Nafscob on Monday. Of the six Vice-Chairmen, two are newcomers.
Rao belongs to Telangana Rashtra Samithi and is believed to be a close associate of the state Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. He replaced Dileepbhai Sanghani who relinquished office after becoming the Chairman of NCUI.
The election of the board of directors took place in the general meeting held on Tuesday in Mumbai. On the occasion six vice-chairmen were also elected unopposed.

In the last decade, the number of private sugar mills has risen constantly, thanks to ailing cooperatives dominated by politicos, say experts
In 1951, India’s first cooperative sugar mill was set up at Pravaranagar in Ahmednagar district and the cooperative movement since gained roots in the State. However, financial mismanagement, lack of professional approach and mills becoming a source of finance to cater to ambitions of politicians has been ailing the cooperative sugar mills.
Today, the sugar cooperative is losing its space to private players. Out of 171 sugar mills operating this season, 48 per cent (82 mills) are private. ....
