Thousands of farmers from Punjab, on Wednesday (21 April), headed towards Delhi to protest against the now-stalled farm laws. The three farm laws, first introduced as ordinances by the Narendra Modi government last year, were aimed at liberalising the agricultural sector by opening up trade and commerce beyond the purview of Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and middlemen.

Wheat procurement began in Punjab on Saturday, April 10, with commission agents (Arhtiyas) calling off their proposed strike following Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s orders for release of their payments without waiting for Food Corporation of India (FCI) to clear dues.
The Chief Minister ordered various steps to ensure their continued involvement in the process and immediate release of their pending payments of Rs 131 crores.

A few hours after going on a Statewide strike against the Centre’s direction to the State government to transfer the minimum support price of farmers’ crops directly to their bank accounts, ‘Arhtiyas’ in Punjab on Saturday withdrew their strike. The Arhtiyas or commission agents withdrew their strike after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh assured them that they would remain an integral part of the procurement system.
