DARPA s New Space Program Stirs Worldwide Concern Published: February 16, 2021 A new space technology exploration program announced by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency is riling up international opposition as the race to mine space heats up On the same day that Joe Biden obtained the Electoral College majority needed to become president of the United States, a metallic asteroid roughly half the size of New York City made its closest approach to earth. Far from indulging in apocalyptic visions of cosmic destruction, mining company executives like Bob Goldstein of US Nuclear Corp. were seeing dollar signs. Somewhere in the ballpark of $10,000 quadrillion of them in fact. ....

It raises suspicions about the intentions of the U.S. space program there, and rightfully so,” Jessica West, senior researcher at Canada’s Project Ploughshares and managing editor of the widely-respected Space Security Index project, said in an email yesterday. ....
Darpa investigates commercial sector support for Moon manufacturing The US’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) is to survey the private sector about developing designs and materials for building large structures on the Moon. The R&D organisation, which operates within the United States Department of Defense, has announced its “Novel Orbital and Moon Manufacturing, Materials and Mass-efficient Design” (NOM4D, pronounced “NOMAD) programme. Highlighting the increasing support by commercial space companies for access to space , it notes that rockets inevitably impose limits on the payload they can deliver to orbit. “This size constraint hinders developing and deploying large-scale, dynamic space systems that can adapt to changes in their environment or mission,” says the agency. ....
