IRONTON â A Wheelersburg, Ohio, man rejected a plea deal last week in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court that would have sent him to prison for five to seven-and-a-half years. Tyron Markel, 45, of County Road 45, was indicted last year on charges of felonious assault. He also faces community control sanctions violations. Judge Andy Ballard set the case for trial May 3. It would be the first criminal trial in the county since the pandemic started more than a year ago. Jurors in the case will have to be socially distanced, Ballard said. In an unrelated case, Ballard set a July 8 trial for Fred R. Aldridge, 40, of Ohio River Road, Wheelersburg. He is charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in 392 grams of meth, 24 grams of fentanyl and two counts of aggravated possession of drugs. ....

First built in 1940, around 100 vehicles pass over the bridge each day. Inspectors have deemed the bridge’s surface and overall structure to be in poor condition. There are 1,376 other bridges in Ohio found to be “structurally deficient,” according to the most recent inspections from 2020. Most of them are in rural areas like the one on Sugar Creek-Johnstown Road, but hundreds more are in urban areas with much greater numbers of Ohioans traveling over them every day. ....

IRONTON â An Ironton man was sentenced to 57 months in prison Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court in a drug case. Scottie R. Corbin, 32, of the 2100 block of South 5th Street, Ironton, earlier pleaded guilty to aggravated trafficking in meth in the vicinity of a school. He was sentenced in the case by Judge Christen Finley. Corbin could be eligible for early release after serving a year in prison. In an unrelated case, Jonathan W. Rayburn, 35, of the 800 block of South 2nd Street, Ironton, pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity to harassment by an inmate, assault on a peace officer, aggravated possession of meth and illegal conveyance of prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility. He was ordered to get a competency evaluation at Court Clinic in Cincinnati. ....
