Council on Aging distributing fans to Henderson County seniors in need

Staff Reports The Council on Aging for Henderson County is offering fans to relieve homebound seniors of the impending summer heat.  Thanks to two grants received from Duke Energy Progress and Duke Energy Carolinas (distributed by Land of Sky Regional Council), the Council on Aging is purchasing and distributing fans to eligible residents of Henderson County.  To be eligible, persons must be 60 or older (under 60 must have a disability), be a resident of Henderson County, and be in a home situation where a person’s health and well-being is threatened by excessive heat (e.g., no air conditioning).  One fan per household is the limit, according to the Council on Aging.

Flat Rock Four Seasons Politics: Edwards affordable housing bill draws fire

“We are in a crisis in North Carolina in terms of affordable housing,” Edwards told Land of Sky Regional Council members last week. “It is rare that I speak to any group of folks where I’m not asked, ‘What are we going to do about the housing in this state?’” Edwards’ solution, which he says could make buying a home affordable for 1 million North Carolina families, is not going over well with towns in Henderson County or the North Carolina League of Municipalities. The bill requires cities and counties to permit duplexes, triplexes and quadplexes in all residential districts, including those currently zoned for single-family homes. It also requires local governments to allow an accessory dwelling unit on a lot occupied by a detached single-family home and restricts local government’s use of conditional zoning.

Now, the Copuses and Big House LLC have repaired, renovated, and reformed the space. Have you spent any time in Marshall lately? I remember driving through there for the first time in what was likely more than a decade ago. It felt like a little hidden gem in the shadow of a mountainside, tucked away by the river.  It was quiet but it looked like a place ready to happen.

Henderson County News: TRIPLE THREAT: Covid fear, stimulus checks, benefits boost shrink labor pool

As the annual rebirth of tourism swells traffic downtown and beyond, restaurants typically ramp up staffing and extend hours. This year is unlike any other, though, as the dining spots battle lingering Covid fears, compete with one another for the limited supply of labor and confront the challenge from congressional action that made  staying home more financially appealing. Renzo’s Ristorante, at the corner of North Main and Fifth Avenue, has not managed to overcome the challenges yet. At Renzo’s, wide windowpanes that might ordinarily feature signs about nightly specials or entertainment shout a plaintive plea: “Hiring. Let’s Open!”
