A New Hire, a Koch Grant, and a Department in Crisis

A New Hire, a Koch Grant, and a Department in Crisis
The money was supposed to be a lifeline. Instead it added fuel to a fire.

Politics and the Academy
May 25, 2021
The search for a new philosophy professor at Bowling Green State University was relatively uneventful at first. A committee was formed, applications came in. Committee members culled the pool and, as 2015 came to a close, narrowed it down to a handful of people to interview.
But Christian Coons, an associate professor, felt that there was at least one person in the pool who didn’t belong. Brandon Warmke was not as well-versed as some of the other candidates in the history of philosophy, the topic the new hire would teach, Coons said. In an email, he told a colleague that he thought another applicant was better. ( ....

The New Politics of Higher Education

Jonathan Marks
The politics of higher education are changing.
For decades the basic arrangement has had ascendant conservatives arrayed against it and liberals engaged in a defensive rearguard action. The rightwing onslaught was spearheaded by the likes of William F. Buckley, whose
God and Man at Yale (1951) decried the secularization of an elite institution overrun by Keynesians and collectivists. The onslaught endured through the end of the twentieth century in the work of people like Allan Bloom, whose 1987 best-seller
The Closing of the American Mind a broadside in the so-called canon wars deplored the rise of “relativism” on campus and the sidelining of great ideas by works by scholars from historically marginalized groups, supposedly promoted in the academy due to political trendiness rather than merit. ....

The Rise of Right-wing Libertarianism Since the 1950s

One of the useful functions of the latter book, in particular, is that it brings force and clarity to one’s prior knowledge of the dangers of right-wing libertarianism, or more generally anti-government and pro-“free market” thinking. In fact, this sort of thinking is an utter catastrophe that threatens to destroy everything beautiful in the world. I know that sounds like an absurd exaggeration, but it’s not. What with society and nature teetering on the brink, it’s the literal truth. I suppose the reason leftists don’t always take right-wing libertarianism as seriously as it deserves despite their deep awareness of the evils of capitalism is simply that it’s embarrassingly easy to refute. It’s a childish, simplistic, vulgar hyper-capitalist ideology that, once you examine it a little, quickly reveals itself as its opposite: authoritarianism. Or even totalitarianism, albeit privatized totalitarianism. Noam Chomsky, as usual, makes the point eloquently: ....
