We were encouraged to learn that access to cardiovascular care was maintained for high-risk and underserved communities during the pandemic, said Joseph Ebinger, MD, director of Clinical Analytics in the Smidt Heart Institute and senior author of the study. This same study, however, identified some differences in care that we need to delve into further to better understand.
The researchers examined data collected from 87,182 pre-COVID in-person visits, 74,498 COVID-era in-person visits, 4,720 COVID-era telehealth video visits and 10,381 COVID-era telephone visits.
Across all categories, patients accessing COVID-era remote visits were more likely to be from racial or ethnic minority groups, have private insurance and have cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation and heart failure. ....

Cedars-Sinai: Women Have Lower Normal Blood Pressure Range Than Men

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A study at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has found that women have a lower normal blood pressure range than men, the hospital said today.
Established blood pressure guidelines state that women and men have the same normal healthy range of blood pressure. But the study from the hospital s Smidt Heart Institute found that while 120 mmHg was the threshold of risk in men, 110 mmHg or lower was the threshold of risk in women.
Our latest findings suggest that this one-size-fits-all approach to considering blood pressure may be detrimental to a woman s health, said Dr. Susan Cheng, director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging at the Smidt Heart Institute and senior author of the study. Based on our research results, we recommend that the medical community reassess blood pressure guidelines that do not account for sex differences. ....
