My friend Jean Dubberley, who has died aged 89 after suffering a stroke, was a doctor in family planning and community medicine. She was devoted to looking after the health of women and children, and played a vital role in the campaign for national screening for cervical cancer.
In 1963, the Northern Echo, then edited by Harold Evans, was campaigning for women to be screened for cervical cancer. Jean was the anonymous author of a piece published in July of that year headed “How I had a womb cancer test: a woman doctor describes how she had the one-minute cervical smear test”. ....

Demonstration in Dublin against the apartheid regime in South Africa as the Springboks play Ireland.
The South African rugby team toured Ireland and Britain during 1969 and 1970. However, the all white team was not always welcomed with open arms. At the height of apartheid control in South Africa, the Springboks were viewed as a representation of the regime and the inequalities that existed in South Africa. The Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement organised demonstrations throughout the Springboks visit to voice their opposition to the apartheid regime.
On 10 January 1970, the Springboks played Ireland at Lansdowne Road in Dublin. Protesters were again out in force. Accompanied by a band anti-apartheid protesters march down O Connell Street in Dublin holding placards with No Racialism in Sport and Boks Go Home written on them. There are scenes of unrest outside Lansdowne Road as the Springboks arrive by coach and protesters are confronted by police. ....

In 1980, Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba performed inside South Africa against the government's wishes — in Lesotho

In December of 1980, the jazz musician and activist Hugh Masekela was set to return to South Africa for the first time in twenty years. His friend Vic Moloi got him on the phone and told him it was time. It was time for him to return to the country his global liberation work had gotten him banned from.

Masekela left South Africa 20 years earlier. Shortly after the Sharpeville Massacre.
It happened on March 21st, 1960, in the South African township of Sharpeville, when a day of demonstrations against pass laws wore on. The pass laws were created to – among other things – segregate the population and allocate the labor of migrants. The laws most adversely impacted Black African citizens, who would have to carry passbooks when venturing beyond the borders of their homeland. Pass Laws were one of the defining features of South African Apartheid.  ....
