SFFilm might keep drive-in and online events even after it returns to theaters

Organizers of the San Francisco International Film Festival are excited at the prospect of being able to once again pack the Castro Theatre and other local venues for its 2022 festival. But after this month’s successful online and drive-in events, they realize that what started as a pandemic stopgap might become a permanent feature of SFFilm.
“We are going to continue to look at how we can enhance that model of a hybrid of both being virtual and being in person,” said Jessie Fairbanks, SFFilm’s new director of programming. “My dream is that we are able to offer virtual presentations. It allows for greater accessibility and inclusivity at the festival. ....

SFFilm gala goes virtual to honor Glenn Close, Aaron Sorkin

More than eight months into the pandemic, virtual galas and celebrations can still feel strange, clunky and new as we try to keep the rituals of civilization and nonprofit funding alive while also navigating videoconferencing. Glenn Close pointed out these makeshift gatherings also have advantages.
“I can have Armani on the top and blue jeans on the bottom and two dogs in the room,” the actor said over Zoom. “I couldn’t be happier.”
Close’s Zoom strategy was shared as she was honored by SFFilm during its 2020 Awards Night virtual gala on Wednesday, Dec. 9, for her work in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.” The showy role that buried her under costuming is already garnering her considerable Oscar attention. ....
