Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda yesterday said the National Identity (NID) card-related services should remain under the Election Commission.
We think the NID card should remain under the Election Commission. Because the EC created it on the basis of preparation for the voter list … the NID cards came as by-product of the voter list in the country, he told reporters at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city.
His remarks came in the wake of the government s move to shift the NID card-related services from the EC to the Security Services Division under the home ministry. ....

EC Secretary Md Humayun Kabir Khandaker told reporters after a meeting of the
EC at Nirbachan Bhaban, Agargaon in the capital.
As per the election schedule, the last day of nomination paper submission
is on March 18, while the nomination papers will be scrutinized on March 19.
The last date of the nomination paper withdrawal is March 24.
The Laxmipur-2 seat was declared vacant as a Kuwaiti court recently
sentenced lawmaker of the constituency, Mohammad Shahid Islam Papul, to four
years in prison on charges of human trafficking.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda yesterday came down on Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar after the latter said level playing field was not being ensured for all in polls.
At a programme in the Nirbachan Bhaban, Mahbub said voter turnout dropped alarmingly whenever Electronic Voting Machines were used.
He also said local government elections have turned into a model of irregularities due to polls violence, grabbing of polling centres, and vandalism of EVMs.
Immediately after the election commissioner s speech ended, the CEC went straight on to the stage and started criticising Mahbub. All the other commissioners and senior EC officials were present at the event, organised to mark the National Voters Day. ....
