Looking Back: 200 take plunge for free swimming lessons, San Miguel School breaks ground


Excerpts from the Thursday, July 13, 1950 Paso Robles Journal:
200 Are Enrolled for First Swim Lessons
–Two hundred answered the call Monday morning at the Paso Robles municipal plunge for the free swimming and life-saving classes when Miss Alice Durham, executive secretary, and her aides, Mrs. Ed Page and Mrs. Harold Bennett, enrolled the applicants.
Ray Bryant, head instructor with Robert Osman and Carolyn Reich as assistants, soon classified the entrants and set the time for classes.
The classifications were Beginners, 119; Intermediates, 33: Swimmers, 24: Sr. Life Savers, 6: and Jr. Life Savers, 18.
These are to be held as follows: 8:30 to 9:30, Life Saving; 9:30 to 10:15, Swimmers; 10:15 to 11:00, Intermediates; 11:00 to 11:35, Beginners; 11:35 to 12:15, Beginners. ....

Looking Back: Cupid hits 80-year-old lad in Paso Robles


This “Looking Back” view at Paso Robles history comes from one of the hundreds of local newspapers in the Paso Robles Area Historical Society collection. Several local newspapers, dating from the 1800s, have reported on local, national and world events, providing priceless historical views of our community that are not available from any other source. The Historical Society is seeking community support for the multi-phased Newspaper Preservation Project to help fund the transfer of these aged and fragile pages to microfilm and digital images.

Looking Back: Boys School plans shown


Excerpt from the Thursday, May 18, 1950 Paso Robles Journal
–The Cuban Room at the Paso Robles Inn was the setting Friday evening, May 12 for a dinner attended by 75 members of the local chapter of California State Employees Association, their families, and friends. Morgan Lewis, Supervising Construction Engineer, Department of Public Works, Division of Architecture, and Paul J. McKusick, Superintendent of the Paso Robles School for Boys were the principal speakers of the evening. Dr. Fred Halterman, Professor of Economics, U.C., Santa Barbara, and Regional Director of District 10 CSEA, spoke briefly on state-wide Association business.
Carroll E. Hodson, president of the local chapter, introduced the speakers. Lewis gave a resume of State building plans for the new Mental Hygiene facility in Atascadero. McKusick explained the latest developments in the building plans at Paso Robles School for boys. His talk illustrated by a plot-plan, drawn to scale, showing the location ....

Paso Robles History Museum reopens April 16, introduces new Wine History Gallery


–The Paso Robles Historical Society has announced the reopening of the Paso Robles History Museum on Fri, April 16 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Carnegie Library in the Downtown City Park. The museum was closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 closures, reopened briefly in November, but closed again when the state ordered another business closure.
The April 16 opening introduces the new Wine History Gallery presenting a view of the early history of California, the history of California viticulture, and the development of vineyards and wineries in San Luis Obispo County. The exhibit in the gallery has been developed with the assistance and resources of the Wine History Project of San Luis Obispo County. ....
