This could be a potential breaking point in the U.S.’s relationship with Turkey. Yet, the recognition was more than just giving lip service to the horrible events that transpired two decades before the Holocaust.  The president’s statement follows through on his campaign promise to formally acknowledge the systematic deportation and killing of between one to 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire as a genocide.
