SCV News | Newhall School District Votes to Ask CDPH for More Leniency on Mask Policies

Newhall School District board members voted unanimously Tuesday to ask the California Department of Public Health to provide new face-covering guidance to give the district discretion over whether to make masks optional.
The motion comes on the heels of a number of districts that have had to answer questions from families and staff about the mask policies that will be in place for the coming year.
As of Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and California Department of Public Health did not specifically request distancing between students while in the classroom, but did require masks indoors.
The motion approved by the Newhall district’s governing board formally requests that the district be given discretion to decide its own optional mask-wearing policies, saying that it would give “voice to the desires expressed by many district teachers, families and students.” ....

Times of San Diego, more than two dozen California school systems have been targeted in the past five years.
Ransomware attacks use software to encrypt files on computers on the internet and lockout organizations from accessing their files.
Sometimes, these cybercriminals will then threaten to sell or release sensitive information in return for large amounts of money.
Cybercriminals attacked at least 1,681 American schools and universities in 2020, according to research by Emsisoft. The year prior, only 89 schools systems were attacked with ransomware.
Andrew Brandt, a malware researcher with SophosLabs, told the Times that school systems are essentially low-hanging fruit, due to schools usually tight budgets and small IT departments. ....

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. Schools aren’t exactly known for their expansive budgets. Many struggle to pay for basic operations such as functioning air conditioning and employee salaries.
But this past year, cybercriminals have attacked a growing number of schools across California and the country. A handful of California schools, colleges and universities have experienced ransomware attacks, often with harsh consequences: Sierra College had some systems shut down during finals week, Newhall School District’s 10 elementary schools went a week without online school during the pandemic, and UC San Francisco paid a $1.14 million ransom. ....
