Little Compton is one of the few places where you could get lost and not mind it a bit. Back roads beckon you with verdant vistas and venerable homes in a happy marriage of country charm and cosmopolitan mien. 
For a health care executive who had summered in Little Compton his whole life, buying a home there felt like an adventure right out of Goldilocks. For several years, he visited house after house, but nothing was quite right: This one lacked character. That one was too ostentatious. Another needed too much work.  
You might conclude that the house he ended up buying was “just right.” But life is no fairy tale, and the homeowner concedes that the home, which had sat empty for years, was actually “kind of gross.”   ....

Bélinda Quinn is a wielder of sensory pleasures. A baking wunderkind, she fell in love with making bread the very first time she visited the boulangerie where a friend worked, tied an apron around her waist, bellied up to the counter and extended her hands downward. “As soon as I touched the dough,” she recalls, “I said, ‘Oh, my God. This is what I want to do.’” 
In Quinn’s native France, bread-making is a profession that’s near sacrosanct, insinuating itself into every aspect of French culinary culture. “Bread has been in the world forever, and still today, it’s part of our diet. Bread-making is our thing in France,” Quinn says in a thick Parisian accent, with an unapologetic chuckle.   ....

If you told Israeli native Guy Hanuka a decade ago that one day he’d be baking babka, challah, bureka and rugelach in a tiny coastal enclave halfway around the world, he’d have burst out laughing. Hanuka didn’t discover baking until completing his mandatory service in the Israeli army. After learning from mentors in Tel Aviv and opening a bakery in Shanghai, his wanderlust took him to Johnson and Wales University’s College of Culinary Arts in Providence.  
After graduation and marriage, he was eager to open a bakery, but was intimidated by talk of business plans and investors. So he chose a simpler path. “We just put a post on Facebook.”     ....

“Most every weekend, the line’s out the door; the seats are full,” says Jennifer Hilton.   
“All my friends who never want to come over the bridge from Newport, East Greenwich, Lincoln when I finally get them here, they’re just blown away,” chimes in Hilton’s friend, Holly Prentice.   
The two are gushing between bites of roasted cauliflower salad, having managed to snag a bistro table on the porch of the recently opened Groundswell Cafe + Bakery at Tiverton Four Corners. The Parisian-style eatery takes up the ground floor of an 1870s building that housed a sandwich shop called the Provender for almost 40 years. On the opposite corner sits Groundswell Garden + Home, which is also new. The cozy home-goods-cum-gift-shop fills the interior of a 1754 house blessed with wide floorboards and working fireplaces. Even on a cold January weekday, business in the two establishments r ....
