What We Find When We Get Lost in Proust

Save this story for later.
When one finds the bottom of a barrel being energetically scraped, it is proof, at least, that whatever was once floating on the top must have been very delicious indeed. And so, having reached the very bottom of the barrel marked “Marcel Proust,” the scraping continues, even unto the splintered wood. The usual run of a famous author’s remains is more or less set: first the (disillusioning) biography, then the (surprisingly mundane, money-mad) letters, and finally the (painfully naked) diaries, in which erotic obsessions that seem curious and fresh in literary prose look mechanically obsessive in daily record, as with Kenneth Tynan and John Cheever. What comes after is mostly academic commentary. ....

Six years ago, I wrote an article about how I had learned to embrace and love reading again
books, that is, not Insta stories or statistics about COVID-19 numbers. Ironically, social media sites like Goodreads and Twitter through its #50BookPledge hashtag helped keep me on track to finish my annual goal.
Well, dear reader, I have an update: it’s changed my life. As other new year’s resolutions have failed, it’s been the one I’ve stuck with. This week, I’m embarking on my eighth straight year of doing this. I just set my reading goal for 2021 at 52 books, or one book per week. ....

From politics to parenting, the books to look out for

Who are we? What interests us, in this age of plague? To understand the world today, let s look at the non-fiction books coming in 2021. A pattern of transformation runs through next year s non-fiction releases: the pandemic has changed the human race. We have new priorities and a different perspective. Where do we go from here?
Feminist titles focus on the power of female independent living; and writers on race look at harnessing the energy of the Black Lives Matter movement to turn protest into progress. Working-class voices rise.
Parenting gets a reality check, with new releases providing the unvarnished truth, and mental health books have a no-nonsense edge in challenging times. Other themes in 2021 are the internet, medicine, women s histories, nature, Northern Ireland, and the fight for Irish independence. ....
