University reforms to ensure relevance to working life
The Norwegian government has put proposals before parliament to increase the relevance of higher education to ‘working life’ to ensure that graduates are better prepared for employment.
In a White Paper (in Norwegian) put before parliament last month, the government said it would continue to invest in flexible and more decentralised education and will ask the Government Loan Board to make the regulations more adapted to lifelong learning challenges and instruct the Directorate for Higher Education to tune financial support regulations more to the needs of working life.
In a second White Paper on the governance of public universities put before parliament last month, the government proposed that the regulations be eased so that more universities can provide professional degrees on psychology, law, theology. ....

Education agencies reorganised into mega-directorate
The ministry is merging smaller governmental units on 1 July to create a large directorate for higher education as part of an ongoing process of reforms in the educational system in Norway from kindergarten to lifelong learning, the ministry has announced.
Following the announcement on 4 February, the following units are being merged:
• DIKU, the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education, with 130 full-time staff and headquarters in Bergen.
• Skills Norway, the present Directorate for Lifelong Learning, with 170 staff members and offices in Tromsø, Bergen and Oslo.
• Parts of UNIT, the Directorate for ICT and Joint Services in Higher Education and Research, which has 200 employees and headquarters in Trondheim and an office in Oslo. ....

Wide-scale investment in upskilling has the potential to boost global gross domestic product (GDP) by US$6.5 trillion by 2030 and lead to the creation of 5.3 million net new jobs globally by 2030, according to a new report published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on 21 January.
